12 pages of apps on iOS4

The 12 pages of apps bugs hasn't taken long to appear on my iPhone 3G with iOS4 installed.

It happened after I dragged several Folders onto invisible pages then syncing the change. Doing this is a quick way to remove the apps from the Folders. Folders do not retain their structure if moved to an invisible page in iTunes. I placed the folders on the last invisible pages. There there 17 Folders in total before syncing. When syncing was complete I had the 12 pages.

  5. Art 'n' Trace - Drawing - Rubbish - WARNING: Each time I've used this app, the saved output has *over-written* another image in my Camera Roll -- DESTROYING the original image. The results is two saved images from Art 'n' Trace. The OVER-WRITE is not immediately apparent because the Camera Roll icon retains the original image. It is not until export or a look at the full-size look at the image that the problem is seen. Even then it can be confusing as to what has happened. I lost images that were irreplaceable using this app and warn against using Art 'n' Trace app.

iPhone Page 12 survives the iTunes Sync

...even though it is shown as an invisible page in iTunes:

Update: ...but not the third Sync. Now back to eleven pages. The difference is that if I move the Apple Voice Memos app to be an 'invisible', I get 12 pages with the Voices Memos app place back on page one on the subsequence sync. Running with 12 pages in OS 3.1.2 means that with each sync you never know which pages with be visible because each sync they change in some way. I've found it necessary to manually return my iPhone to eleven pages to avoid all the hassle.

12 Pages of Apps on iPhone OS 3.1.2

I rearranged my apps. Currently there are only 349 installed on my iPhone. I moved Voice Memo off page 10 to the invisible page 12 in iTunes. I did this by bumping. I dragged Voice Memo to page 11 in iTunes which causes the last app icon to start a new blank (invisible) page 12. I swapped Voice Memo with the app icon on page 12. I moved a couple of other apps to page 12 in my rearranging. I then did an iTunes Sync. Note: This is not a Jailbreak iPhone.

When I came to use my iPhone, page 2 was blank with one app icon. Big poo smells, I thought. This has happened in the past with iPhone OS 3.1.2 but it usually means that the previous page 11 is now invisible. But when I looked, I realised that the previous page 11 was still there, only now as a *visible page 12* on my iPhone. When I went back to page 1, I saw the Voice Memo app. The one I had moved to invisible page 12 in iTunes before I did the Sync. All the other apps on the invisible page 12 have remained invisible.

I've never had 12 pages of apps on iPhone OS 3.1.2, I did have on OS 2, so 12 pages on OS 3 is a first for me. I will see if the extra page disappears on the next Sync.

Weeding my apps - got it down to 500

I have found that if I have more than 500 apps on my iPhone 3G, apps are more likely to crash with memory shortage problems. Under 500 apps and I don't get the problems.

iPhone Quirk: 3 on One Page

How it happens:

1. Have 12 pages of apps, 2 spaces available on a page and 1 space on the bottom bar.

2. Install an new app.

3. On completion of the install, the iPhone also fills the other spaces, putting the iPod icon on the bottom bar and the first 'invisible' app installed starting from 1 then through A-Z thus 1Password gets the honour.

Result: The iPod icon jiggles with all other icons static and the 1Password icon has an active 'Delete' cross.

How to send more than 5 photos using Mail on the iPhone

1. In the Camera Roll: tap the Forwarding button
2. Tap to on the photos to select then tap Copy
3. In Mail: Tap and hold down in the message area of the email. When the Magnifier Lens appears, release and tap Paste.

You can send upto 5 photos using the Share button but for more than 5, use copy and paste. An advantage of copy and paste is that this method will send the original sized image and avoid the photo resizing problem.

Note: There is a limit to the total size of the attachment sent by the iPhone 3G of 5MB. So if the photos are all taken at full resolution 1600x1200, it is likely that you will not be able to send more than 5 photos because the sixth photo would make the attachment greater than 5MB.

I described how to send just one original size photo on this post:

12 Pages of Apps on a Standard iPhone

After installing an app the screen flashed, the iPod icon appeared on the bottom menu bar (I usually just keep 3 apps on it) and it alone started jiggling but without a cross on its top left. I thought that I had lost all my apps but a twelfth page had appeared.

I didn't want the app to disappear into nowhere land so when I moved the one app off the page and the page vanished.

Update: The twelfth page appeared again. This time I moved apps into the empty-bar-one-app page that I didn't mind if they became invisibles. Then I moved the the app I want as an icon to a 'safe' page. Then I Synced. Result - the twelfth page became populated with previously invisible app icons. When iTunes re-populates a page, it starts with app with number names e.g. 1Password, then A through Z.

I wish I could choose which app icon showed on my iPhone and which are invisible. I can make new app visible by 'pushing' an app off the very last visible page then buying a new app and the new app will fill the vacated space. What I cannot do yet is make a space then fill it with an app whose name starts with a letter higher than 'C' of apps that I already have.

Simplenote - Current Serious Flaw (Fixed)

Listen!

If you change the password on the website, the iPhone app stops syncing. Then when you change the password on the iPhone, all the notes on the iPhone are deleted before copying the notes from the web onto the iPhone app. This means that if you have been entering notes via the web and the iPhone you will lose the iPhone-only notes unless you email them out -- one note at a time -- all the iPhone notes (unless you can work out which ones are only on the iPhone). This is a serious flaw and cost me days worths of notes as I only realised what happened in hindsight.

Update: 01-Sep-09. Version 2.11 of Simplenote fixed this problem.

Retro Recorder - Emoji in Tape Title Crashes the App (Fixed)

Listen!

Tip of the Day - Don't use Emoji in the Title of a Tape. It crashes the app.

Retro Recorder Splash Screen

Update: 17-Sep-09. Version 1.0.9.3 partially fixes this problem. Partially because you can name a tape with emoji in the title; press record and it appears that you are recording but when you press Stop you cannot Play the 'recorded' tape nor is the emoji titled Tape added to the Tape Collection. Ideally, if you include emoji in the title before recording, you should not be able to record and get a warning as to why.
